Fall Foliage in Aosta Valley: 5 Magical Spots to Discover This Autumn

Beneath Mont Blanc: The Best Routes Through Courmayeur, Cogne, and La Thuile.

There is a season when the Aosta Valley leaves behind the vibrant energy of summer and has not yet donned its white winter attire. This is autumn: a moment of pure magic, when the larch forests turn to pure gold and the trails rediscover their tranquility. To celebrate this spectacular time of year, we have decided to share with you not just a simple list, but a true map to the 5 places that, in our opinion, capture the deepest and most authentic essence of the Aosta Valley’s colors.

Arpy Lake Aosta Valley in Autumn Fall

1. Val Ferret: Pure Gold at the Foot of Mont Blanc

(Location: Courmayeur – Difficulty: Easy)

The perfect place to begin your journey discovering the foliage in the Aosta Valley starts in Val Ferret in Courmayeur: an immense carpet of golden larches unfolds beneath the snow-capped peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. The walk is almost entirely flat and follows the Dora river, with the sound of the water accompanying your steps. It is a total immersion in tranquility and color, perfect for families and also suitable for strollers.

L’Atelier’s Tip: Start from the Lavachey or Arnouva area and go in the late afternoon. The low-angled sunlight setting the larches ablaze is a spectacle that is worth the trip alone.

2.Valnontey: Face to Face with the Nature of Gran Paradiso

(Location: Cogne – Difficulty: Easy)

Valnontey, the gateway to the Gran Paradiso National Park, is a sanctuary of peace in autumn. The forests of larch and Swiss stone pine offer an incredible chromatic display, but the real added value is the chance to encounter wildlife. This is the mating season for chamois, making them easier to spot, as well as the ibexes.

L’Atelier’s Tip: Bring binoculars with you. Follow the flat path that goes deeper into the valley and stop in silence from time to time: the chances of a close encounter with the park’s animals are very high.

3.Lake Arpy: A Mirror Among the Golden Larches

(Location: Colle San Carlo, Morgex – Difficulty: Easy)

After a 45-minute walk through an enchanted forest, you arrive at the basin of Lake Arpy. In the fall, its crystal-clear waters perfectly mirror the golden larches and the magnificent Grandes Jorasses. The tranquility and beauty of this place are absolute, a truly soul-regenerating experience.

L’Atelier’s Pro Tip: The best time for a visit is early in the morning. The lake is often perfectly still, and the light is ideal for capturing crisp reflections and spectacular photos.

A Spectacular Walk in Cogne Towards Grauson

4.The Pré-Saint-Didier Skywalk: A Thrill Suspended Over the Void

(Location: Pré-Saint-Didier – Difficulty: Easy)

For a one-of-a-kind perspective, take the easy stroll leading to the Skywalk suspended over the Orrido Gorge. From this vantage point, a 180-degree view of the Mont Blanc range opens up, beautifully framed by the warm-colored forests below.

L’Atelier’s Pro Tip: Combine the walk with an afternoon of pure bliss at the renowned Terme di Pré-Saint-Didier. Immersing yourself in the warm outdoor thermal pools, surrounded by fall foliage, is an unforgettable sensory experience.

5.Lake Verney: The Fiery Red of the Little Saint Bernard Pass

(Location: La Thuile – Difficulty: Easy)

Situated along the road leading to the Little Saint Bernard Pass, the vast Lake Verney transforms into a unique spectacle in autumn. The blueberry plants surrounding its shores take on a spectacular fiery red color, creating an unforgettable chromatic contrast with the deep blue of the water and the yellow of the surrounding larches.

L’Atelier’s Tip: This itinerary offers its maximum splendor between late September and mid-October. It is only recommended until the first significant snowfall, which can make the pass road impassable.

Lake Loie Cogne In Autumn

6. Secret Spot: Loie Lake

(Location: Lillaz, Cogne – Difficulty: Demanding)

For seasoned hikers seeking a truly authentic experience, Lake Loie is our best-kept secret. A steep path above Lillaz takes you to this alpine lake, a stunning shade of emerald set within a quiet basin. From a panoramic viewpoint just before the lake, the view suddenly opens up to the Mont Blanc massif.

L’Atelier’s Pro Tip: This is the most challenging hike of the list, taking about 2 hours, but it rewards you with an unmatched panorama once you reach the water’s edge. Set out in the morning and plan to have lunch on the lakeshore.

FAQ

When is the absolute best time to see the fall foliage in Aosta Valley?

The “peak” of the fall foliage, especially for the high-altitude larch trees turning a golden color, typically happens between the second and fourth weeks of October. Every year is a bit different, though, depending on the weather. We recommend planning your visit for this timeframe, but keep an eye on the local webcams to catch the perfect moment.

What do you recommend wearing for these autumn hikes?

The weather in the mountains can change quickly in autumn. The secret is to dress “like an onion” (in layers). A pair of waterproof hiking boots, a warm fleece, and a windproof/rainproof jacket are essential. Never forget gloves and a hat, especially if you are gaining altitude or stopping for a picnic.

Are the suggested trails also suitable for children?

Absolutely, many of them are! Itineraries like Val Ferret and Valnontey are almost entirely flat and perfect for a family walk, even with trekking strollers. For others, like Lake Arpy, a bit more experience with walking is required. Always check the “Difficulty” level we have indicated for each route.

Is it possible to see the fall foliage even without hiking?

Of course! The Aosta Valley offers spectacular views even for those who don’t like to walk. You can enjoy the colors simply by driving along the regional roads towards Cogne or by going up to Colle San Carlo (where the path to Lake Arpy is located). For an unforgettable aerial view, we recommend taking the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car.
